How to Knit for Beginners

Categories: Beginner

To knit you need to learn 2 basic stitches: the knit (k) and the purl (p).
If you learn to knit these 2 stitches you can knit almost anything.

It’s possible to create more elaborate stitches pattern by combined these 2 basic stitches.

On the video below I’ll show you how I knit and purl.

When you knit on one row, and purl on an even row, on a straight knitting, you create the stockinette stitch.

If you only knit, on all rows, on a straight knitting, you create the garter stitch.

On circular knitting if you only knit on all rounds, you create the stockinette stitch.

Knitting Styles

There are different ways of knitting and achieve the same result while knitting.

My knitting is a continental style.
But there is the combined continental style, the english style and the portuguese style. At least, these are the ones I know of.

The combined continental style looks like the way I knit, but you insert the needle on the back loop of the stitch, while the continental style insert the needle on the front loop.

If you have hard time to learn to knit, I recommended you try other style, it might be the better way for you.
That is what happen to me when I first start to knit. After I try other style, it became way better.

If you search on Google and Youtube for the others knitting style, you will find out videos and informations on how to do it.

And then, you just have to practice!
